“Ir Smekha” Jewish Children’s Development Center

The Jewish Sunday School in Ulyanovsk opened in 1998 and serves children 7-13 years old.  The curriculum, which includes Jewish history and tradition as well as a creative studio, is being expanded to include a greater focus on Jewish identity.

Classes meet for 4-5 hours on Sundays and offer instruction in Jewish history and tradition; the Land of Israel; leadership training and theater.  On Fridays the children take part in Kabbalat Shabbat celebrations and study the weekly Torah portion.  A hot, kosher meal is provided for the children as is transportation back and forth to the school.  Enrollment is close to 40 and the children are divided into two groups based on their age and knowledge.
